Star Wars: 4th Battle of Tanab

Jonathan put on a fun Star Wars game at the club last night using Alien Squad Leader rules and his very nice 32mm figures. A rebel host, led by a Wookie king and Luke Skywalker had to destroy an installation controlled by the Imperial forces of Darth Vader and his storm-troopers.

Mal and Doug were on the rebel side, whereas Patrick and I were imperial. The latter had to hold a compound, prevent the installation from being destroyed, or kill half the rebel leaders to win.

Episode One

The battle began with the Wookies moving up on the rebel right and the mercenaries arriving at the installation by transport. Stormtrooper fire soon forced both nearby Wookies and mercenaries to flee, however.

One of Mal's Wookie clans took up position behind a hedge, despite Wookie fire being less than precise.

My imperial walker emerged from cover and hit the Wookies, while Patrick moved Boba Fett and fired on the mercenaries. More stormtrooper fire gave two more hits to a Wookie clan unit, which was forced to flee.

Episode Two

It looked bleak for the rebels, but Mal's Wookies now charged two of my isolated stormtrooper units to the left of the compound. One was destroyed, the other ran off!

Doug's droids fired on the installation, without result.

I decided to move Darth Vader to the imperial flank. Meanwhile, Boba Fett's fire forced a mercenary vehicle to retire.

Not all stormtroopers were obeying orders due to poor activation rolls, but I managed to get the heavy weapons team to pop out of the compound and drive off some Wookies at the hedge.

Patrick finally activated his scout bike, which zoomed off towards the imperial right flank.

Episode Three

Doug's rebels moved up to the wood on their left, while one unit of his droids inflicted two damage points on the installation, which was protected by another imperial walker.

Three melees now took place near the compound.

One unit of Wookies attacked my stormtroopers in the base, but lost and fled.

Another Wookie unit caught up with my fleeing stormtroopers from the previous turn and butchered the clones.

However, when a Wookie clan leader assaulted Darth Vader in the compound, Lord Vader won and the Wookie had to flee, bellowing in terror.

Vader now commenced a cinematic rampage, exiting the compound and dispatching the Wookie leader. He charge on, and after a re-roll, personally drove off two more Wookie units!

More Wookies were repulsed by two of my stormtrooper units in the compound.

Patrick secured the imperial right when a scout bike occupied rough ground. The Dark Troopers emerged from behind the installation but failed to hit any Wookies.

The turn ended with Boba Fett raiding the rebel lines and most rebel forces cowering in woods before the power of the Dark Side!

Episode Four

As Doug redeployed his mercenaries behind a wood, Mal's attack on the compound continued.

Two Wookie units attacked one stormtrooper unit there, but it was a drawn combat.

Mal had rallied some of his men, and his three Wookie clans piled into the woods in preparation for another assault, but he failed to charge the Wookie King into Vader.

But in a big melee at the compound, the rebels finally scored a success, when both the Dark Troopers were obliterated by a double-four roll by Mal after charging into the melee, and two further stormtrooper units fled from the devastating Wookie attack.

Even so, Vader eliminated another Wookie unit, while stormtrooper fire forced others to flee.

Conclusion

The game ended with only four (of 10 possible) hits on the installation inflicted. Mal had breached the compound, but had taken considerable losses to his three Wookie clans. Doug's and Patrick's forces had persistently failed to activate and/or do much damage, but the rebels were hemmed back into the woods on both flanks. Overall an imperial win. Eeexcellent!

Thanks to Jonathan for an engaging battle and delightful blast from the past. It was great to see so many familiar characters on the tabletop, and the figures were a pleasure to behold. Jonathan's umpiring was authoritative and helped bring the action to life for us greenhorns. Hopefully we will see more Star Wars in the future, including more of his impressive miniature collection.
